BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team split their Saturday matches at UMass Boston, falling to the Beacons 3-2 (25-17, 26-24, 21-25, 24-26, 15-13) and Springfield 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-22).
In their first matchup of the day
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the Hawks with 16 kills, and
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) had four service aces.
Jasmine Babbitt (Charlestown, R.I.) had five blocks paired with the 17 digs by Jackson to lead the Hawks.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) also led the squad with 30 digs.
In the first set, UMass Boston led, 8-7, before pulling away by scoring seven out of the next eight points, as they secured the set. In the second frame, The Hawks used an eight point run, overcoming a two point deficit to take an 17-11 lead. The Beacons then cut the lead to one before rallying for set win.
After splitting the next two sets, UMass Boston secured the match separating themselves in the fifth set as they earned the final point with a 14-13 lead to close out the win.
Against Springfield, the Pride took control early, jumping out to a 19-5 lead before closing out the first set. Springfield then jumped out to a 16-6 lead on their way to a set two win, and before separating from Roger Williams at 14-14, as they pulled away scoring four of the next five points.
Roger Williams (5-13, 1-3 CCC) hosts Nichols on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6 pm in the Campus Rec Center. The Hawks will then host a Saturday, Oct. 15 tri-match for homecoming against Wellesley and Johnson & Wales.
