BRISTOL, R.I. – The No. 2 seeded Roger Williams University men's soccer team looks to advance to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship game on Saturday, for the second time under head coach
James Greenslit, when they take on No.3 Western New England, Wednesday, Nov. 2.
The Hawks posted a 12-3-4 overall record with a 6-2-1 record within the CCC so far this season, and look to improve upon an 3-2 victory against the No. 7 seeded Gordon College Fighting Scots on Saturday, in the CCC Quarterfinals.
Roger Williams advanced after a wild 10 minutes of play that saw four goals, and with the deciding goal coming off of the foot of
Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) that was scored with 55 seconds remaining, to break the 2-2 tie.
Western New England enters Wednesday with a 10-6-3 record playing conference opponents to a 6-3 record. One of their losses on the season came at the hands of Roger Williams in a 1-0 loss on Oct. 22
nd.
On Saturday the Golden Bears hosted No. 6 Nichols in their CCC Quarterfinal tilt. Western New England advanced, defeating the Bison 2-1, with a pair of goals in the opening half.
Beltran leads the Hawk offense with 29 points on the season, tallying 11 goals and seven assists on the season, and is followed by
Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) who has 11 points with four goals and three assists.
John McCarthy (Hampstead, N.H.) also has four goals, and
Liam Blaisdell (Plymouth, Mass.) has tallied three goals.
In net for the Hawks
Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) has held the responsibilities for Roger Williams, starting 11 contests on the year and playing a total of 990 minutes. He has allowed 13 goals this season holding opponents to 1.18 goals per game, while boasting an 8-2-1 record.
The Golden bears are led by sophomore midfielder Mike Milazzo who has five goals and an assist, along with Sean Lanzillo who has four goals and three assists, both of whom have 11 points this season. Matt Spruill and Sean O'Neill both hold eight points on the season with Spruill being exclusively a goal scorer for Western New England.
Roger Leland looks to be the goalkeeper for Western New England as he has started in 11 of 19 contests for the Golden Bears, with 0.89 goals against average and .780 save percentage. The Golden bears have started three separate goalkeepers with season holding opponents to 1.32 goals per game and a .731 save percentage.
The winner of the contest will play the victor of No. 4 Suffolk and No. 1 Endicott (Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 pm) on Saturday.
