BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University wrestling team fell to New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) foe Springfield, 30-12, in a dual meet Friday evening in the Campus Rec Center Field House.
Springfield entered the match ranked fourth in NEWA for the team tournament rankings that were released Friday.
Starting the matches at 157-pounds, Springfield picked up six points to start with an opening match pin by Leonard. The Hawks then cut into the Pride lead with a 15-13 decision victory by
Jacob Cardozo (Southington, Conn.) before the Pride picked up another pin at 174-pounds.
The Hawks again responded with
Cole Shaughnessy (Fairfield, Conn.) earning a 4-1 decision over the eighth ranked wrestler in NEWA.
Spencer Fetrow (Holliston, Mass.) then continued to build momentum with an 11-7 decision victory.
Holding a 12-9 lead with five matches remaining, Springfield created separation with the next three matches going in favor of the Pride, in a pin, tech fall, and major decision win. A win by
Tyler Williams at 141 pounds tallied another three points for Roger Williams, before eventually falling in the final match of the day.
Roger Williams is now 11-2 in dual meets and will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 10 when they host the Scott Viera Open beginning at 9 am to round out the semester. The Hawks will then return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Williams Open.
