Men’s Tennis Dominates Suffolk In Shutout Victory

BRISTOL, R.I. — It was a picture-perfect Bristol afternoon and the Roger Williams Men's Tennis team was just as flawless on the court on Sunday, sweeping Suffolk University, 9-0, at the RWU Tennis Courts. The win is the fourth instance in the past five matches in which the Hawks have won in shutout fashion.

With the victory, RWU continues their unblemished spring while improving to 11-1 overall with their only loss coming to Division-II Stonehill College last fall. They are also 4-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference competition this season and they have not dropped an in-conference match in the regular season since the 2018-19 campaign and along the way, they have won nine straight. The Rams, meanwhile, drop to 1-5 on the year and 1-3 against CCC foes.

Hawk Highlights
Roger Williams wasted little time asserting their dominance on this Sunday afternoon by shredding through doubles play to claim the early advantage. At #1 singles, Jon Trevethan (Berlin, Conn.) and Dan Tocco (East Quogue, N.Y.) had little trouble dispatching of Hasan Esrawi (Braintree, Mass.) and Diego Hernandez-Pons (Mexico City, Mexico), 8-1. At the second flight, Ryan Schuck (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Johnny Baldyga (Simsbury, Conn.) sailed past Matthew Gallego (Revere, Mass.) and Juan Velazquez (Boston, Mass.) in shutout fashion, 8-0. The closest doubles match came at #3 doubles but even that match saw Tyler Cain (Montpelier, Vt.) and Matt Glassman (West Hartford, Conn.) handle Haik Semerdijan (Farmington, Conn.) and Ben Bricker (Los Angeles, Calif.), 8-3.

It was a similar story in singles play as the Hawks only dropped three sets to the Rams. Trevethan shutout Esrawi in the topflight, 6-0, 6-0 while Tocco blanked Hernandez-Pons, 6-0, 6-0. At #3 singles, Glassman breezed by Velazquez, 6-0, 6-1 before RWU got back to their shutout ways in the fourth flight where Schuck handled Gallego, 6-0, 6-0. At #5 singles, Baldyga rolled Semerdijan, 6-1, 6-1. The hosts employed fresh legs in the sixth flight, but the result was the same as Arlex Correa (Lynnfield, Mass.) did not drop a point to Bricker, winning 6-0, 6-0.

What's Next
Roger Williams hopes for some weather more reflective of today rather than the rest of the week as they enter the heart of their conference schedule when they venture to play Curry College on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 PM.
