Men’s Tennis Team Drops Critical Conference Matchup To Nichols

BRISTOL, R.I. — It was a beautiful day for a showdown between the top two teams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference as he Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team battled Nichols College to a 7-2 defeat on Thursday evening at the RWU Tennis Courts. The Hawks saw their ten-game in-conference winning streak come to an end.

With the loss, RWU drops to 11-2 on the season and 5-1 in CCC play. The Bison, meanwhile, move to 10-5 and 4-0 against conference foes.

Hawk Highlights
Roger Williams would find themselves in an early hole as they dropped the second and third flights of doubles action in this one. In #2 doubles, Adrian Toderascu (Chisinau, Moldova) and Steven Kuang (Guangzhou, China) bested Ryan Schuck (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Johnny Baldyga (Simsbury, Conn.), 8-1. Meanwhile, in the #3 doubles match, Moritz Kern (Herzogenrath, Germany) and Caio Dieckmann (Rio De Janiero, Brazil) handled Matt Glassman (West Hartford, Conn.) and Tyler Cain (Montpelier, Vt.), 8-3. The match in the topflight would see some of the best players in the conference going toe-to-toe and it was as advertised as Jon Trevethan (Berlin, Conn.) and Dan Tocco (East Quogue, N.Y.) went blow-for-blow with Giancomo Ghitti (Brescia, Italy). They required a lot of tennis to come to a result in this one and sure enough it was the Hawks who were able to hold off the Bison, 8-6.

Needing a huge comeback in singles action, RWU would come up short. In the topflight Trevethan dropped his first match in nearly a month to Glutti, 6-3, 7-5. #2 singles would see Tocco go the distance against Trevor Schwarzmann (Dartmouth, Mass.) but ultimately fell, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. In the third flight, Glassman got blanked by Toderascu, 6-0, 6-0. Alongside them, in the fourth flight, Schuck fell to Kerr, 6-4, 6-4. In the #5 singles matchup, Baldyga grabbed RWU's only singles win over Perez, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3. Finally, down on the bottom court in the sixth flight, Arlex Correa (Lynnfield, Mass.) lost to Jose Siles (Lima, Peru), 6-0, 6-0.

What's Next
Roger Williams gets a much needed few days off following the marathon in this one as they will not return to the court again until Tuesday, April 19th when they will travel to play Wentworth beginning at 4:00 PM.
