Women’s Lacrosse Set’s Single-Game Scoring Record, Trounces Wentworth On Senior Day

BRISTOL, R.I. – It was a historic Senior Day for the Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team, as they set a program-record for goals in single game in a 25-4 beatdown of the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field. The Hawks netted a season-high dozen goals in the opening quarter, and they never turned back on their way to the 12th-most goals scored in a single game in Division-III Women's Lacrosse this season.

With the win, RWU improves to 11-1 on the year, having won 11-straight since their season-opening loss to Springfield College. They are also now 5-0 against Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents and have won 11 in a row against CCC foes dating back to 2019. The Leopards, meanwhile, fall to 3-7 on the year, 1-4 in conference play.

Nikki Norton (Braintree, Mass.) had a senior day for the ages, pilling up nine assists, the second-most in a game in Women's Lacrosse program-history and tied for the third-most in a game in the nation this spring. She added a pair of goals bringing her point total to 11, a number that is tied for the fifth highest total in a game in program history. As a team, the 12 goals scored in the first frame is also a new program-high since women's lacrosse switched to a four-quarter format this season.

All of the offense was in support of Hannah Goodwin's (Branford, Mass.) strong Senior Day in net as she made three saves against four goals allowed to get the win and improve to 11-1. On the other end, Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) was under constant duress and surrendered 25 goals against two saves to take the loss and drop to 3-6.

How It Happened
Roger Williams made extremely quick work of this one, getting into running clock within the first ten minutes of the contest. After their first shot of the game by Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) missed the net and Wentworth committed a turnover on their clear attempt, Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.) tallied the first of the many goals in the period. The Hawks proceeded to control each of the next nine draws, four of which were by Cunningham, and found the back of the net on their first shot in each of their subsequent possessions with all of that occurring before the guests could even get on their offensive side of the field. When they finally did get on offense, they committed a turnover and took one shot. When the quarter came to a close, RWU had a dozen tallies on the board from eight different sources including Chapin and Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) with three apiece.

Despite the game being, for all intents and purposes, over, there were still three quarters remaining as the pace of the scoring slowed down in the second quarter. It was the Leopards who struck first with a goal from Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.). They later got one from Stone Carmichael (Falmouth, Maine) while the Hawks got a free position tally from Campbell Haller (Nashua, N.H.) and a goal from Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) and the score was 14-2 at the break.

The RWU offense found its form again out of halftime as they struck three times within the first four minutes courtesy of Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine), Cunningham, and Beck. Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass.) briefly interrupted the Hawks dominance with a goal off a Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) feed but Sarazin and Cunningham added another score each to get the hosts to 19 goals on the day.

The final frame opened with Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine) scoring her second goal of the game and the season on a free position attempt. Haller, Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.), Abby Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.), and Grace Paliseno (Brightwaters, N.Y.) each recorded goals for RWU before Galan got a man-up tally for the guests. With 40 seconds remaining, Nikki Norton (Braintree, Mass.), who was on the distributing end of so many goals on the day, got the honor of the record-breaker off a feed from Chapin, finalizing the score at 25-4.
