BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team was able to overcome New England College in a non-conference matchup, defeating the Pilgrims 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) on Tuesday night.
Freshman
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) registered double-digit kills for the first time this season, while
Kristen Dansereau (Killingworth, Conn.) registered seven kills.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) picked up 18 assists, while adding three aces, and
Rachel Borzone (Syosset, N.Y.) had nine digs along with five aces.
After going down 20-15 in the first set to the Pilgrims, the Hawks scored 10 of the final 12 points of the set, to overtake New England College and hold on for a 25-22 set victory.
Trailing early in the second set, Roger Williams was able to score four of the next five points, to take a 12-11 lead. A kill by New England College's Samantha Vargas, leveled the score, but the Hawks used a kill by Picchietti to spark a four-point run. The Hawks were able to hold onto that lead through the rest of the set.
In the third set, the Hawks were able to hold a five-point lead before the Pilgrims rattled off four straight points. While down 12-10, New England College scored another four straight to take a lead.
Roger Williams held a 24-21 lead, before the Pilgrims scored two straight, before a kill by Dansereau closed out the match.
Roger Williams (3-4, 0-0 CCC) hosts SUNY Potsdam and UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 17, before beginning CCC play on Tuesday, Sept. 20 against Curry.
