BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's soccer team held the lead at the halftime break, but eventually fell in an offensive battle to Bridgewater State, 5-4.
The No.4 ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches Region II poll outshot the Hawks 11-10, putting two more shots on net. Both goalkeepers made three saves each, while both squads earned four corner kick attempts on their side of the field.
The Bears were the first team on the board, when Makenna Lessard fired a shot that bounced off the diving keeper into the path of Michelle Belcher, who knocked it in off the rebound.
The Hawks struck back shortly after scoring off a shot by
Leah Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) leveling the contest at one apiece. The Hawks then took the lead, after a corner kick bounced around in front of the net, before an attempted clear by a Bridgewater State defender knocked the ball into the goal.
Belcher then scored again for the Bears to level the score at 2-2, before a goal in the 37
th minute by
Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) jumped the Hawks ahead 3-2.
After holding the lead into the second half,
Julia Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) had her chance to score, striking in the 55
th minute, as the Hawks took a two-goal advantage. The Bears didn't back down however scoring three straight goals, the first two back-to-back from Sydney Sousa, over the final 30 minutes of play, while keeping the Hawks out of the goal, for a 5-4 victory.
Roger Williams (4-6, 1-1 CCC) will travel to face Suffolk on Saturday, Oct. 1 in a 3 pm matchup before hosting Wesleyan on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 pm on Bayside Field.
