BRISTOL, R.I.-- The Roger Williams University women's basketball led wire-to-wire on Tuesday night, defeating Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Western New England, 51-37, moving the Hawks' conference record to 7-0.
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) was the top scorer, with a total of 19 points, on a career best .889 shooting performance. Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) also scored in double-figures, earning 11, with two assists and three steals. Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) finished the game with five points and five rebounds.
The Golden Bears were led by Shaina Cooney who tallied eight points while shooting 50 percent from the field.
The Hawks took an early lead with shots being made by Nikki Rosa (Nahant, Mass.) and Elie. Roger Williams led Western New England by three points at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, six out of Hawks ten points were earned at the free throw line. Western New England added seven points of their own, with four different scorers. Roger Williams led 19-13 at the half.
The third quarter saw eight layups made, four of which were scored by Elie, for her eight points in the quarter, propelling the Hawks to a 17-point lead.
Two three-pointers were scored in the fourth quarter, by Elie and Galligan, respectively, giving Roger Williams a 22-point lead. Caroline Aaron (Wrentham, Mass.) wrapped up scoring for the Hawks on a layup with 24 seconds left in the period.
The Hawks led Western New England in rebounds, 37-32, steals, 7-5, and blocks, 4-1.
Roger Williams (11-2, 7-0 CCC) will play in their next game, visiting Endicott on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. They will then face Trinity on Monday, Jan. 16 before hosting Wentworth on Jan. 18.
