WORCESTER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University wrestling team went 2-0 Saturday, defeating WPI, 39-9, and Trinity, 24-18, in a pair of duals hosted at the WPI Sports & Recreation Center.
In their opening match against WPI, the Engineers picked up an early pinfall victory at 125-pounds to take a 6-0 lead,
Christopher Tringali (Chester, N.J.) picked up a sudden victory win against Charlie Pavis and
Tommy Gallagher (Foxboro, Mass.) added six points with a pinfall victory of his own to give Roger Williams a 9-6 advantage after 141-pounds.
Matt Lucas (Danbury, Conn.) added three more points with an 8-2 win by decision ayt 149-pounds, before
Ben Bariso (Butler, N.J.) followed with a pin in 45 seconds to take an, 18-6 match lead into the second half of the dual.
The Engineers picked up three points via decision at 165-pounds, before the Hawks rallied for pins in three of the final four matches by
Leonard Breit (Johnston, R.I.),
Cole Shaugnessy (Fairfield, Conn.), and
Addison Boisvert (Scarborough, Maine).
The Hawks then followed with a matchup against the Bantams, the Hakws jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after Tringali scored an 8-4 win by decision at 133-pounds. Trinity then picked up a major decision win and followed with a 2-0 decision win to cut the Hawk match score lead to two.
The Hawks added three more points, when Bariso edged out his opponent 5-4, but Kevin Lyskawa earned a pin for the Bantams to take a 13-12 lead in the match.
Jayden Curley (Mansfield, Mass.) and Shaughnessy combined for six points, picking up a pair of wins by decision, before a tech fall loss leveled the score at 18-18 headed into the final match.
In the final contest of the day Boisvert pinned his opponent to secure a 24-18 victory for the Hawks in their second match.
Roger Williams (13-2) will participate in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championships on Sunday, Jan. 22 at Springfield. The Hawks will then host Plymouth State and Bridgewater State on Saturday, Jan. 28 in the Campus Rec Center Field House.
