Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Sweep RIC in Faceoff of In-State Rivals

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team took a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-11) victory on Thursday evening in the Campus Rec Center against in-state rival Rhode Island College.
 
The Hawks tallied 10 blocks in the match, while also assisting on 31 of 33 kills.  The Hawks now trail the all-time series 28-26.
 
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) had 10 kills in the match to lead the Hawks attack, while Jillian Smith chipped in seven. Hailey Brasseur (Barrington, N.H.) earned four aces, with Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) being in on five blocks defensively. Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) led Roger Williams with 19 digs and Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) earned 25 of the Hawks 31 assists.
 
In the opening set, the Hawks and RIC battled back and forth, with the Anchorwomen cutting the Hawks lead down to one. The Hawks then scored three straight points and 10 of the next 14 points to take command of the set.
 
In the second set, the Hawks jumped out to a 16-9 lead before the Anchorwomen tallied six of the next seven point to pull within two. The Hawks scored four straight jumping out to a 21-15 lead.  The Hawks would hold on for a 25-21 set victory.
 
In the third set, the Hawks rattled off 12 of the first 15 points of the set, before RIC pulled within four. Roger Williams would close the match, earning 11 of the final 12 points, including a string of four straight service aces by Brasseur.
 
Roger Williams (7-10, 1-2 CCC) will begin a string of five straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matches, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1:00 pm, when they host Western New England in the Campus Rec Center. They will then travel to face Suffolk on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
