Women’s Volleyball: Hawk Force Fifth Set but Fall to Golden Bears on Senior Day

BRISTOL, R.I. - In a showdown at the Paolino Recreation Center on the campus of Roger Williams University, Western New England emerged victorious over Roger Williams, sealing a 3-2 (25-20, 25-15, 20-25, 23-25, 19-17) victory in a closely contested Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball match.

Prior to the match, the Hawks recognized Rachel Borzone (Syosset, N.Y.) for her contributions to the women's volleyball program through her collegiate career.

Western New England recorded 54 kills, 12 aces, and 11 blocks, while Roger Williams delivered 60 kills, 8 aces, and 13 blocks.

Isabelle Petty, Yemayma Molina, and Alissa Hawes were the standout performers for the Golden Bears. Petty and Molina each contributed 12 kills, while Hawes added 11. Taylor Geist led with 5 aces, and Hailey Sell added 4 more. On the defensive front, Petty contributed 5 blocks. Sell was pivotal with 21 assists, and Geist provided 18. Hawes led with with 24 digs, Mayer and Becca added 20 apiece, with Sell chipping in 15.

For Roger Williams, Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the way with 19 kills, closely followed by Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) with 14. Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) chipped in with 9 kills. Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) delivered 5 aces, and Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) contributed 2. Felix and Mattiucci led the blocking effort with 7 and 3 blocks, respectively. Mattiucci was instrumental with 51 assists, while Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) and Jackson chipped in with 38 and 17 digs, respectively.

After the Hawks were able to level the score, 17-17 in the first set, the Golden Bears then scored eight of the next 11 points, taking the set. In the second, Western New England then led from start to finish in the second set taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

With the Hawks trailing 19-12 in the third set, a kill by Taylor Joyner (Ashburn, Va.) sparked a 10-point run for Roger Williams who took control of the set from that point. Roger Williams leveled the score at 2-2 in the fourth set, 25-23, to force a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, the Hawks led 12-8, but Western New England battled back to level the score at 12-12. With Roger Williams leading 17-16, the Golden Bears were able to rattle off three straight points, with the Hawks falling 19-17.

Roger Williams (7-11, 1-3 CCC) will travel to Boston for a Wednesday, Oct. 18 match at Suffolk at 7:00 pm.  The Hawks will then host Wentworth on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center for Homecoming & Family Weekend.
