WENHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's soccer team played to a draw against Gordon College on Wednesday afternoon, 1-1, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match at the Brigham Athletic Complex.
The Hawks out shot the Fighting Scots 10-8, with five of their shots being on goal compared to the Scots' two. Roger Williams also held an advantage in opportunities from the corner, 5-1.
The Hawks came out of the gate aggressively. A couple early opportunities included a corner kick in the seventh minute, and multiple shots at the goal. Their best opportunity early on presented itself in the 10th minute of action. A cross into the box by Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) bounced around until eventually finding Bianca Robbins (Johnston R.I.), whose shot deflected off the crossbar and into the goalkeeper's hands.
Despite neither team having found the back of the net at halftime, Roger Williams showed significantly more promise on the offensive end. After one half, the Hawks had the advantage in shots (5), shots on goal (2), and corner kicks (3). This effort combined with a stout defense, which allowed only one shot, which was not on goal.
Coming out of the break, Gordon quickly took advantage of an opportunity. In the 50th minute of play, the Fighting Scots had a breakaway. Taylor Talesnick passed ahead to Kristi DiRico, who dribbled into the box and was able to sneak the ball into the goal, despite a deflection on the ball by goalkeeper Coco Marrelli (Farfield, Conn.)
Roger Williams responded with a goal of their own in the 64th minute. After being awarded a corner kick, Taylor Pierce (Exeter, N.H.) placed the ball on the back post and over the goalie's outstretched hands, allowing Mya D'Antonio (Marshfield, Mass.) to connect with her head and find the back of the net.
Roger Williams (8-6-4, 3-1-2 CCC) will host Wentworth on Saturday, Oct. 21st at 12:00 pm, and will celebrate Senior Day. The Hawks will then close out the regular season out next Tuesday when they host Suffolk.
