BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's soccer team soared to a win against Wentworth, 3-1, on Saturday on Bayside Field for the Hawks' Senior Day on Homecoming and Family Weekend.
Prior to the match the Hawks recognized their six seniors, with a pregame ceremony honoring the contributions of
Ariana Montero (Milford, Conn.), Jen Donohue (Halifax, Mass.), Sofie Morris (Arlington, Mass.), Isabel Gabriel (Tyngsboro, Mass.), Raffaella Brunetti (North Providence, R.I.), and Hannah Coffey (Montgomery, Mass.).
Roger Williams dominated the game, taking 21 total shots while holding Wentworth to just eight. 10 shots that the Hawks took were on target while the defense held the Leopards to only five shots on goal. Of those five shots on goal, four were saved by goalie
Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, Conn.). The Hawks also had an advantage in corner kicks, 5-2.
Wentworth struck first in the 18
th minute of play. After the Hawks had controlled possession to start the game, Wentworth had an opportunity to answer with possession deep on the Hawks' side of the field. A foul inside the 18-yard box sent Jordan Dahan to the penalty spot, where she converted for the first goal of the game.
After one half of play, Roger Williams had yet to answer the early Wentworth goal. The Hawks had the advantage in shots (9) and shots on goal (3) at the half, but the Leopards were more efficient. Out of their four shots, three had been on target and one had found the back of the net. Roger Williams also had three opportunities on corner kicks, while Wentworth had just one. The lead remained 1-0 for Wentworth at the half.
The Hawks wasted no time coming out of the break. In the 55
th minute, Morris tied the score up at one. After having her initial shot blocked, Morris followed the rebound and shot a rocket between the crossbar and the goalie's head that made the score 1-1. Roger Williams followed up their first goal just a few minutes later. In the 59th minute, a cross into the box by Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) got past the Wentworth goalkeeper, allowing freshman Morgan Ippolito (Point Pleasant, N.J.) to finish the play and score her first collegiate goal.
After a red card left the Hawks playing a player down, they were able to add on an insurance goal in the 69
th minute to secure the win. After a pass from a Wentworth player was intercepted by Roger Williams, the ball was advanced to Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.). Dribbling through the defense, Robbins delivered a strike from the right side of the box that flew past the Wentworth goalie for the score.
Roger Williams (9-6-4, 4-1-2 CCC) will host Suffolk on Tuesday, Oct. 24
th at 4:00 PM for their final game of the regular season. The Hawks will then prepare for the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, which will begin next Saturday.
