Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Fall in Five Sets Homecoming Weekend

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team fell to Wentworth, 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 20-15, 15-8) on Saturday in the Campus Rec Center during Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The Leopards had nine aces to the Hawks three, with Wentworth winning the kills battle 60-51. The Hawks led with 92 digs on the match, with the Leopards earning 78.

Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led with 14 kills for the Hawks and was followed by Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) with 13. Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) also tallied nine kills. Jackson, Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) and Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) each recorded an ace in the match, with Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) earning 28 assists in the match with Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) earning 11.

Jackson had 27 digs with Hernandez chipping in with 25 in the match, while Felix led in blocks with a solo block and four block assists.

In the opening set the Hawks trailed 4-1 before the Hawks rattled off four straight points.  The Hawks led 21-16, were able to tie the match at 23-23. The Hawks then scored two points off of kills by Jackson to clinch the set.

In the second set the two teams played to a 21-21, before Wentworth scored four of the next five points to secure the set. The Leopards also took the third set to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

Down 12-10 in the fourth set, the Hawks scored five straight to take a 15-12 lead which they would maintain throughout the set to force a fifth and decisive set. After playing to a 7-7 tie, the Leopards pounced on a six-point run, taking firm control of the match and securing the win.

Roger Williams (7-13, 1-5 CCC) will travel to Curry on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 6:00 pm. The Hawks will then host a pair of matches, with a CCC contest against the University of New England on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1:00 pm and Wednesday, Nov. 1 in non-conference action at against Eastern Nazarene.
