Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Win Fourth and Fifth Set in Comeback Victory Over Nor’Easters

BRISTOL, RI – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team came out victorious in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match on Saturday, defeating the University of New England, 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 15-10).

Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) had 13 kills with a .346 hitting percentage with a dig.  Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led with 14 kills and had 19 digs. Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) had 31 assists in the game with the Hawks. Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 21 digs with Mattiucci holding 12. Defensively Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had five solo blocks.

After dropping the first set 25-18, the Hawks rebounded in the second, after going down 6-1 to open things up, the Hawks rattled off six straight points to take a 7-6 advantage. Playing to a 20-20 tie with the Nor'easters, Roger Williams then scored five of the next seven points leveling the match.

The Hawks again played a tightly contested set in the third, trailing 20-19, But the Nor'easters went on a run, closing out the set with a 25-19 victory. In the fourth the Hawks trailed 7-5, but a five-point run sparked by a service error by the Nor'easters, gave the Hawks a 10-7 lead. The Hawks expanded their lead to as many as 12 on their way to forcing the decisive fifth set.

In the fifth set, the Hawks jumped out to a 9-2 lead, before the Nor'easters were able to cut into the lead.  The Hawks were able to hold on for the win, with a kill by Jackson finishing the match.

Roger Williams (9-13, 3-5 CCC) will host their final home match of the Regular Season on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 6:00 pm before traveling to face Hartford on Saturday, Nov. 4 in their final regular season match at 2:00 pm.
