DUDLEY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team downed Nichols in three sets, Tuesday evening, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-18), in the Nichols Athletic Center in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.
The Hawks hit .168 in the match, holding Nichols to a hitting percentage of .032. Roger Williams held a 35-22 advantage in kills, with an 10-2 lead in aces. The Hawks also led with 46 digs and 31 assists.
Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) had a match-high nine kills with a .353 hitting percentage, while
Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) earned a hitting percentage of .455 with seven kills in the match.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) had 25 assists in the match, with
Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) chipping in nine.
Rachel Borzone (Syosset, N.Y.) led with 10 digs in the match with
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) following with nine. Bosco also had four service aces in the match.
Roger Williams took an early 17-9 lead in the first set, before the Bison cut the lead down to six. The Hawks then scored three straight points to take the set. With the second set close at 12-11 in favor of the Hawks, Roger Williams rattled off four straight points to take a 16-11 advantage. The Hawks and Bison then split the next 20 points with the Hawks coming out on top.
After the Bison evened the score at 10 a piece in the third set, the Hawks went on a tear, scoring seven of the next eight points. Nichols cut into the lead scoring three straight before five of six went in favor of the Hawks. Nichols cut the lead to four but were unable to hold off Roger Williams.
Roger Williams (5-9, 1-1 CCC) will play host to Endicott on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center. The Hawks will then travel to New London, Conn. To face Coast Guard on Saturday, Oct. 7.
