NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team defeated Coast Guard in four sets on Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (28-26, 18-25, 25-21, 25-18), at Coast Guard Academy.
The Hawks hit .151 in the match, while Coast Guard managed to hit at .152 percent. Roger Williams also fell slightly behind in kills with 44 to Coast Guard's 47. The Hawks did lead in digs with 81 to Coast Guard's 73.
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the way for the Hawks with 15 kills, Brianna Picciette (Batavia, Ill.) followed closely behind with 10.
Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.) hit at an impressive .333 percent. Jackson also had the most digs with 20, followed closely by
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) who had 18.
Roger Williams and Coast Guard kept it close throughout the first set, going all the way to 26-26, before Picchiette and Jackson hammered the ball down, earning them the first set. The second set started off much like the first, until the score reached 18-18, where the Hawks pulled ahead, winning the set 25-18.
The third and fourth sets also ended in Hawk victories, with the third staying close until the end, where Roger Williams took over and scored four of the last five points. The Hawks got out fast in the fourth set, gaining a 16-10 lead and eventually winning 25-18.
Roger Williams (6-10, 1-2 CCC) will host their next two games, Rhode Island College on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 6:00 pm, and a conference matchup against Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1:00 pm. The Hawks will then head back on the road to face off against another conference opponent, Suffolk, on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
