Women's Basketball: Hawks Tripped Up by #4/#9 Tufts

BRISTOL, R.I – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team took their first loss of the season Tuesday evening against #4/#9 Tufts, 72-54, in the Campus Rec Center Gymnasium.
 
Roger Williams was led by Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass), who recorded 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three blocks. Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) scored 13 points for the Hawks, and Abrielle Racine (Mooers Forks, N.Y.) added 10 points and five rebounds. Overall, Roger Williams shot 40 percent from the field and went 4-15 from the three-point line.
 
The Hawks and Jumbos went back and forth early in the game. By the end of the first quarter, Tufts led the Hawks 17-15. Roger Williams was led by Elie, who scored eight points in the quarter. Tufts went 3-6 from the three-point line, keeping them ahead. Over the first couple minutes of the second quarter, Tufts gained a substantial lead over the Hawks. After a 9-2 run to start the quarter, the teams went back and forth trading baskets until the half.
 
After the end of the first half Tufts held a 12-point lead, outscoring the Hawks 36-24. The Hawks shot 36.4 percent from the floor in the first half, including 14.2 percent from beyond the three-point line. Roger Williams' leading scorers were Elie (8 points) and Racine (6 points). The Jumbos were led by Maggie Russell with 14 points and Samantha Sousa with 11 points.
 
The Hawks were unable to make any progress on a comeback in the second half. Despite a better shooting percentage (40 percent) by the Hawks in the third, Tufts extended their lead to 15 by the end of the quarter. By the end of the game, Tufts had added three points to their lead, making the final score 72-54.
 
Roger Williams (1-1, 0-0 CCC) will play their next two games on the road, playing again Tuesday, Nov. 21 against UMass Dartmouth. The Hawks will then travel to Brandeis Monday, Nov. 27 before returning home and beginning conference play.
