DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team fell to the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth, 89-72, at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The Hawks saw
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) lead the squad with 19 points with seven rebounds, going 7-15 from the field.
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) chipped in 17 points with a board, and three assists, while
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) scored 15 points with 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Melanie DeMeo and Kaylin Zalewski both scored 21 points on the day, with Carly Whiteside earning an 18 point and 10 rebound double-double, with five blocks. Teja Andrews added four steals on the defensive end with Amaris Mills adding three.
Roger Williams opened the game with Elie finishing a layup attempt, but Whiteside added four straight for the Corsairs to take the lead.
Abrielle Racine (Mooers Forks, N.Y.) knocked down a three pointer to take a one-point advantage just 2:43 into the contest. Battling back and forth through the opening quarter, the Hawks took the lead with Elie knocking down a jumper before the Corsairs hit a buzzer beater to end the frame.
UMass Dartmouth took the lead 1:04 into the second frame, and did not relinquish, holding their advantage to the halftime break. The Corsairs then expanded their lead to as many as 12 in the opening five of the third quarter. Roger Williams cut the lead down to six with 24 seconds remaining, heading into the fourth trailing 58-52.
The fourth quarter went in favor of the Corsairs, Roger Williams held the Corsairs level for most of the final frame, before a bucket from Whiteside, sparked a run that gave UMass Dartmouth an 11 point lead. The Corsairs held on knocking down shots at the line to hold on for the win.
Roger Williams (1-2, 0-0 CCC) will take on Brandeis on Monday, Nov. 27 at 6:00 pm, before hosting their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener against Western New England at 5:30 pm.
