Women's Volleyball: Hawks Fall to Hartford in Five Sets

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team fell to Hartford on Saturday afternoon, falling to UHart 3-2 (22-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-11, 15-12) at the Hartford Volleyball Gymnasium.
 
Roger Williams trailed in kills, 57-46, and digs, 47-39. Both teams had 15 service aces, and eight blocks in the match. Isabella Labrada had a game high 16 kills for Hartford, while Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led with 13 for Roger Williams.
 
Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) tallied 11 kills with three block assists. Ava Mattiucci (North Kingston, R.I.) had 28 assists to lead Roger Williams, with five kills with a .313 hitting percentage, with 12 digs and four block assists. Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had five kills with a solo block and three block assists, hitting .417.
 
Roger Williams jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, before Hartford cut the lead down to one. Roger Williams then led 20-16 late in the first set, before holding on for the 25-22 victory. In the second frame, Roger Williams held an 21-14 advantage, but Hartford then scored seven of the next eight points, to cut the lead down to one. Hartford then only allowed three of the final six nine points in the set to take the set.
 
Hartford jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, before Roger Williams responded with a 5-0 run of their own.  Tied at 18-18 in the third set, Roger Williams then went on an 7-2 run to close out the set, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
After trailing 4-1 in the fourth set, Hartford responded with a 6-1 stretch to take a 7-5 lead in the set. Hartford closed out the set, outscoring Roger Williams 18-5, leveling the match. In the decisive fifth set, Roger Williams held a 12-7 lead before Hartford rattled off eight straight points to take the set and match.
 
Roger Williams (9-15, 3- 5 CCC) will begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament Play as the No. 6 seed on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 7 pm at No. 3 Western New England.  The winner will advance to play in the CCC Semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 9 against the winner of No. 7 University of New England and No. 2 Endicott.
