Women’s Basketball: Galligan’s Buzzer Beater Gives Hawks 28th straight win over CCC Foe

BOSTON, Mass. – The Rams of Suffolk forced it to come down to a buzzer beater by Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.), as the Roger Williams University women's basketball team won their 28th straight contest over a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent on Saturday, defeating Suffolk, 74-73, at Smith Court in Boston.
 
The Hawks have won their last 28 matchups against opponents from the CCC, with six wins coming in the CCC Tournament.
 
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) went 6 of 16 shots from the field with 13 rebounds for a double-double and a pair of blocks and two steals. Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) added 13 points in 19 minutes coming off the bench shooting 50 percent from the floor with four assists and three steals on the defensive end.
 
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) started off the game scoring on a layup on their opening possession, jumping out to a four-point lead.  The Rams then leveled the score at four before Roger Williams eventually created a five-point lead with 2:15 remaining in the opening frame.  The rams saw Madi Mahoney score on a layup attempt with 39 seconds remaining to take a three-point lead into the second quarter.
 
The Hawks expanded their lead out to as many as 13 in the second quarter, leading 35-22 with 1:47 remaining, but Suffolk cut the lead back down to nine entering the break.
 
After a third quarter that saw the Hawks outscore Suffolk, 22-15, the Hawks entered the final frame leading by 16 entering the final frame.
 
In the fourth quarter, Suffolk came out hot, outscoring the Hawks 30-12 in the quarter, with the Rams holding a two-point lead with 12 seconds remaining, 73-71.  The Hawks took a time out before Galligan inbounded the ball to Abrielle Racine (Mooers Forks, N.Y.), Racine then found Galligan on the quick pass back, shooting from the right side of the rim, drilling the shot as time expires.
 
Roger Williams (4-2, 2-0 CCC) will face off against CCC opponent Curry on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 pm before hosting #11/#15 Trinity on Thursday, Dec. 7 in the Campus Rec Center at 6:00 pm.
