MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team picked up their third Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win of the season on Tuesday, defeating Curry, 74-53, at Katz Gymnasium.
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) led the Hawks with 20 points, and 15 rebounds for a double-double, with six assists. Elie also added four steals and a pair of blocks on the defensive end, while shooting 8-12 from the field.
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) had 16 points with eight rebounds and four assists, with a block and a steal.
Abrielle Racine (Mooers Forks, N.Y.) also added 11 points with six rebounds in the matchup.
After Coppola got scoring off with a jumper 1:15 into the contest, Elie followed, finishing a layup in the paint to put the Hawks up by four. Emerson Cherry then responded on the ensuing possession with a three to cut the Hawks lead back down to one. Roger Williams led by seven with 2:32 remaining in the quarter, but Olivia Gourdine finished a three point, cutting the Curry deficit to four. The Hawks came back with a layup by
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) who put the Hawks up 15-9 to end the opening quarter.
After trading buckets, the Hawks were able to expand their lead to as many as 12 in the second quarter, outscoring the Colonels, 23-17, in the second frame of play.
In the third quarter, Roger Williams jumped out to a 20 point lead, outscoring Curry 15-7 in the quarter. The Hawks managed to expand their lead in the fourth, edging out the Colonels 21-20 in the frame for the win.
"It was a good team win today," said Head Coach
Kelly Thompson. "I'm happy with our defensive effort and overall rebounding performance. It should give us some confidence as we head into a battle with (#13/#16) Trinity on Thursday."
Roger Williams (5-2, 3-0 CCC) will host #13/#16 Trinity (Conn.) on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center. The Hawks will then be off until Sunday, Dec. 31 at 6:30 pm when they take on St. John Fisher at the Naismith Tournament, hosted by Springfield.
