Women’s Basketball: Roger Williams Downs #13/#16 Trinity, Beat Second Nationally Ranked Opponent

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team downed #13/#16 Trinity on Thursday, 62-56, defeating their second nationally ranked opponent of the season.
 
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) scored 21 points, knocking down 11 shots from the free throw line, with a pair of rebounds, and three assists.  On the defensive end Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) led with four steals, while tallying 14 points with four assists, pulling down seven rebounds. Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) added eight points with six boards and a pair of assists.
 
On the game the Hawks had eight steals, while forcing 17 turnovers in the matchup.  The Bantam's Emma Wax led all scorers with 13 points in the matchup with three rebounds, and a pair of steals and two assists.
 
The Hawks jump started the game, scoring on their first possession when Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) finished on a layup, off a pass from Abrielle Racine (Mooers Forks, N.Y.). With both teams playing a tightly contested opening quarter, Racine then finished a layup with 1:41 remaining in the opening quarter, sparking six straight points in favor of Roger Williams to end the opening frame including a buzzer beating three by Chloe Richardson (Norwell, Mass.) , 15-10
 
In the second quarter, Roger Williams continued to expand their lead as they took a 13-point lead after Galligan drilled a three with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half.  The Bantams responded with five seconds remaining when Lucy Dorion finished a layup, trailing 31-20 in the break.
 
Both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter, but the Hawks were able to hold a double-digit lead until the final minute of the contest, as Roger Williams secured the victory.
 
Roger Williams (6-2, 3-0 CCC) will be off until their opening tilt of the Naismith Invitational hosted by Springfield College, when they take on St. John Fisher at 6:30 pm on Sunday, Dec. 31.  The Hawks will then take on the hosts on Monday, Jan. 1 at 4:00 pm.
