Women’s Lacrosse: Hawks Fly by Lyons, Power Past Wheaton

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger William University women's lacrosse team was clicking on all cylinders on Wednesday afternoon on Bayside Field, defeating Wheaton, 18-2, in non-conference action.
 
In net for the Hawks Caroline Roach (Acton, Mass.) started in the first half, making a pair of saves as the Hawks picked up the decisive win.  At the half, Zoey Cormican (Rochester, N.H.) came in to close out the victory with a two save effort.
 
Coming off of her Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Week nod, Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) tallied eight points scoring a pair of goals and dishing out six assists.  Beck also had two ground balls and a caused turnover.  Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.) added six points, leading the team with four goals. Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.) was responsible for a pair of goals and an assist, while Brooke McErlain (Hampton, N.H.), Lauren Canata (West Springfield, Conn.), Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.), and Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.) all added two goals.
 
Abby Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.) and Kate Shultz (Portsmouth, N.H.) each had a pair of caused turnovers, while Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) led the team in ground balls with four.
 
As a team Roger Williams cleared 17 of their 21 attempts, while also winning the ground ball battle, 27-22.
 
The Hawks got things off to a hot start early, with Kelley scoring her first after receiving a pass from Lily Cunningham, 2:35 into the matchup. Cavanaugh and McErlain both added a goal in the next 4:20 as the Hawks took a 3-0 lead.  Roger Williams led 7-0 after the first quarter, with four goals coming in the final 3:54 of the frame.
 
The Hawks scored another four to start the second quarter, before Lara Finnie scored the lone first half goal for the Lyons. Canata then scored a goal as time expired in the opening half to put Roger Williams up 12-1.
 
In the second half, Roger Williams outscored Wheaton 6-1 as they cruised for the victory.
 
Roger Williams (2-0, 0-0 CCC) will be on the road this weekend when they take on Bowdoin on Sunday, Mar. 5 at 1 pm.  The Hawks will then host MIT on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 1 pm before playing their next three games on the road against opponents from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).
