Women’s Lacrosse: Hawks Soar on Senior Day

BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger Williams women's lacrosse team took the win over the University of New England Nor'easters on Saturday afternoon on Bayside Field, 26-7.

The seven seniors on the team were recognized in a pre-game ceremony. The honored players were Brooke McErlain (Hampton, N.H.), Julia Michaud (Wakefield, Mass.), Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.), Campbell Haller (Nashua, N.H.), Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.), Abby Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.), and Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.).

Beck was the top scorer in the game, having eight goals, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers. L Cunningham finished the game with five goals, one assist, and one caused turnover. Kate Shultz (Portsmouth, N.H.) showed strong defense, picking up five ground balls and recording three caused turnovers.

In the first quarter, the Nor'easters were first to strike with a shot in the net by Sydney Balotin. Haller put the Hawks on the scoreboard, assisted by Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.). Goals were scored by Cavanaugh, L Cunningham, and Haller, before UNE was able to score again. Roger Williams went on to put five more balls in the net in the period. The Nor'easters' Morgan White put in a goal of her own before the end of the quarter, bringing the score to 9-3.

The second quarter saw the Hawks score six more goals. Haller scored moments into the frame, Beck and McErlain put in two apiece, and L Cunningham closed out the scoring in the first half.

Going into the third quarter, UNE scored before Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) put in a goal of her own for the Hawks. L Cunningham put in two more during the period. With seconds left in the quarter, Kelley added a goal, assisted by McErlain.

Seven goals were scored for Roger Williams in the final quarter of the game, with Beck putting in five of them. The Hawks outdid the Nor'easters in ground balls, 25-19, and caused turnovers, 15-7.

Roger Williams (9-6, 6-1 CCC) will be on the road on Tuesday, April 18 at 4 pm at Babson. They will then face Wentworth on Saturday, April 22.
