MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Roger Williams women's lacrosse team went head-to-head with Cabrini on Saturday afternoon, coming out on top, 19-15, to continue in tournament play.
Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was the top scorer for Roger Williams, with six goals and one assist. She added seven ground balls and one caused turnover. Brooke McErlain (Hampton, N.H.) led defensively with four caused turnovers, four ground balls, one goal, and one assist. Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.) tallied six points in the game, having five goals and one assist. Caroline Roach (Acton, Mass.) came in in relief making five saves while allowing one goal.
Starting off scoring for the Hawks in the first quarter was Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.), assisted by Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). The Cavaliers were quick to make a goal of their own, coming off of a free position attempt. Roger Williams scored twice more before Cabrini put another ball in the net, with Chapin putting one in, assisted by Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.), then Beck scored from a free position attempt. Goals by Kelley, Beck assisted by Abby Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.), and Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.) helped the Hawks maintain a slight lead through the first quarter. The Cavaliers put in a goal with a minute left in the frame, knotting things up going into the second quarter, 6-6.
Moments into the second period, Cabrini's Neve Murphy scored. The lead was momentary as Lily Cunningham scored from a free position attempt, putting the Hawks even with the Cavaliers, 7-7. Cabrini scored two goals before Pantano, assisted by Beck, put one in for Roger Williams. Additional goals made by Beck and Kelley put the teams at a tie with two minutes left in the half. Cabrini scored on a free position attempt, giving them the lead, 11-10.
In the third quarter, Cabrini scored three goals. Two of those goals happened in the beginning of the frame before the Hawks scored. Three of the goals scored for Roger Williams were put in the net by Lily Cunningham. Beck added one and Kelley put one in as the clock ran out, pushing the Hawks ahead again, 15-14.
The Hawks made three goals in the fourth period before the Cavaliers scored. Roger Williams oudid Cabrini in ground balls, 33-26, while the Cavaliers outdid the Hawks in caused turnovers, 19-15.
Roger Williams is set to take on Wesleyan on Sunday, May 14 at 1pm.
