BRISTOL, R.I. – In a convincing victory, the Roger Williams University women's volleyball team defeated Eastern Connecticut State University in three sets, claiming the 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-19) win over the Warriors in the Campus Rec Center on Tuesday.
The Hawks led with 36 kills in the matchup, while also tallying eight aces to lead the way. The Roger Williams defense played to a 4-4 draw in blocks, but also had 61 digs to the Warriors 51.
Jillian Smith led the way with 11 digs while
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) and
Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.) had seven and six respectively,
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) led the teams in six service aces and 26 assists, while
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) and
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 17 and 16 digs respectively.
Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Winston both had a pair of blocks.
In the first set the score was leveled, 9-9, before a four-point run for the Hawks, sparked by a kill by Felix, put the Hawks up 13-9. Leading 18-15, Roger Williams tacked on three more points, before holding the Warriors to two more points, taking the set.
In the second set, the Hawks trailed 24-22 before rattling off five straight points to take the set. In the final frame, the Hawks trailed 18-14, before a kill by Smith began a run of nine straight points in favor of Roger Williams. Bella Johnson picked up a kill to shrink the lead down to four, but it was too great as the Hawks held on for a 25-19 win in the set.
Roger Williams (3-2, 0-0 CCC) will take part in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15 against UMass Dartmouth and Babson, and Saturday, Sept. 16 against Mount Holyoke and UMass Boston.
