Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Fall in Pair of Matches at UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Roger Williams women's volleyball team fell to Mount Holyoke, 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 25-27, 25-21) and UMass Boston, 3-1 (24-) at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational hosted by the Corsairs.

In the opener against Mount Holyoke, the Hawks saw Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) lead the team with 13 kills, followed by Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) who had 11. Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) had 36 assists in the match, while Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 21 digs in the match.  Felix had three blocks in the contest.

The Hawks led 16-13, before the Lyons scored six of the next seven points to take a 19-17 advantage. After Roger Williams earned a point, the Lyons were able to trade points as they closed out for the opening set win.

Leading 20-13, the Lyons allowed Roger Williams to come back to within one point, 21-20, before rattling off the final four points straight. The Hawks then trailed 18-13 in the third set but managed to level the score at 24-24 before, Mount Holyoke scored a point, but the Hawks had three straight points to clinch their first set win. Mount Holyoke took the fourth set to secure the victory.

Against UMass Boston, Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Picchietti each had 10 kills in the match, with Felix recording four blocks. Mattiucci had 32 assists with Rachel Borzone (Syosset, N.Y.) earning 14 digs.

Trailing by one in the opening set, the Beacons then earned three straight points off kills, before the Hawks scored twice with kills by Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) and Picchietti.  The Beacons then scored two straight points to earn the win.

After falling in the second set, Roger Williams and UMass Boston were tied 22-22, before the Hawks had three straight points, capped off by a service ace by Jackson, clinching the third set.  The Hawks would fall in the fourth as UMass Boston clinched the win.

Roger Williams (3-6, 0-0 CCC) will play at Salve Regina and Gordon on Thursday Sept. 21 at 6:00 pm and at Gordon on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 2:00 pm. The Hawks CCC opener will take place in Wenham against the Fighting Scots.
