Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Fall in Five to In-State Rival Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team fell to Salve Regina, 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9) on Thursday evening in the Rodgers Recreation Center.
 
Salve Regina earned 54 kills while the Hawks earned 44. The Hawks trailed by one in aces, 8-7, but lead the Seahawks with 82 digs. Both defenses, held their opponents to under a .200 hitting percentage.
 
Taylor Joyner (Ashburn, Va.) and Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) led the way with nine and eight kills respectively, while Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) followed with seven. Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) and Sam Johnson (Richmond, Va.) had 29 and 15 digs. Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) led with 17 assists.
 
In the first set, Salve Regina led by as many as five, but Roger Williams battled back to win the set by three. In the second, Salve scored two points to take a 14-13 lead, but the Hawks scored to level the score. The Seahawks took a two-point lead, that Roger Williams leveled, before jumping out to a commanding five-point lead as they closed out the win.
 
Level at a set a piece, Salve Regina led by 10 on their way to taking a 2-1 set edge. Roger Williams led 21-18, before the Seahawks cut the lead down to one, but the Hawks again expanded their lead to win by three.
 
In the final set, the Seahawks leveled the score before Roger Williams scored a point to go up, 5-4. Salve Regina then went on a six-point run to take a commanding five-point lead in the final frame, before winning by six points scoring the final two of the match.
 
Roger Williams (3-7, 0-0 CCC) will take on Gordon, in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup of the season on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 3:00 pm.  The Hawks will then host Brandeis on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center.
