BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team opened their day with a loss to Regis, 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 15-6), but rebounded for a win against Clark, 3-1 (21-25, 27-25,25-21, 25-23), on day two of the RWU Invitational.
In their first game, Roger Williams saw
Jillian Smith (New Milford, Conn.) tally 16 kills in the match while
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.)
and
Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.)
had 13 and 12 kills respectively.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.)
had 45 assists in the contest to lead the team and
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.)
had a team-high 22 digs.
After opening up the first two sets with a win, the Hawks and Pride were tied 21-21 in third set, but the Pride rallied for four straight points to close out the set. In another tightly contested set, the Hawks fell after pulling to a 24-24 score line with the Pride taking advantage on two straight points to even the match.
In the final set, Regis took control from the jump, taking the lead and never relinquishing.
In match two of the day against Clark, Jackson led the team with 15 kills, while
Taylor Joyner (Ashburn, Va.)
had 14 kills. Smith had another 13 kills added, while Mattiucci picked up 47 assists int eh match.
Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.)
had a pair of solo blocks and a pair of block assists, while Hernandez
tallied 27 digs in the match.
After dropping the first set, Roger Williams fought to a 25-25 tie with the Cougars of Clark, before back to back kills by Smith and Joyner gave the Hawks the set win, leveling the match.
In the third set the Hawks controlled play from the beginning before rallying from a five point deficit in the fourth set, eventually closing out the match with a 25-23 victory.
Roger Williams (2-1, 0-0 CCC) will travel to Tufts on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 6:00 pm before taking part in the Wheaton College Tournament on Friday, Sept. 8. The Hawks will then host Eastern Connecticut State on Tuesday, Sept. 12 in the Campus Rec Center.
