BRISTOL, R.I – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team suffered their first loss to a Commonwealth Coastal Conference (CCC) opponent in 32 games when they faced the University of New England (UNE) inside the Campus Recreation Center Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
After a back and forth first quarter that saw 11 lead changes, UNE took the lead until 3:23 in the second quarter when
Chole Richardson (Norwell, Mass.) was able to capitalize on driving layup while being fouled. Her three-point play put the Hawks up for the 12
th lead change of the game. UNE quickly battled back with a four-point play of their own from Sydney Jenisch to secure the 13
th lead change which UNE took the half.
UNE maintained the lead going into the third quarter until the 14
th lead change of the game saw
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) complete a four-point play off at 5:23.
Roger held a slight edge in points off the bench with 14 to the Nor'easters 13. UNE had the advantage in points from the paint, 34-20, second chance points, 18-4, and a 10-5 difference in fast breaks.
Roger was led in scoring by Coppola with 15 points along with nine rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Richardson and
Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) both had 10 points with Richardson securing five rebounds and two steals. Dufrane finished the game with two rebounds and two assist.
The game was highlighted with 21 lead changes along with 12 times tied. The Hawks were able to outscore Nor'easters 16-13 to take the lead 43-41. UNE came storming back in the fourth to outscore the Roger 29-17 thus securing UNE's win over the Hawks with a final score of 70-60. The Nor'easters were led in scoring by Faye Veilleux with 18 who also tallied seven rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal.
Roger Williams (10-5, 6-1 CCC) will travel to Beverly, Mass. To take on Endicott on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 5:30pm before wrapping up their week on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host Suffolk at 1pm.
