BEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team rebounded from their first loss to a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent in 32 games with a 68-59 victory over Endicott on Wednesday evening in MacDonald Gymnasium.
Leading the way for Roger Williams was
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) who tallied 14 points, with a 4-9 shooting performance, that included a 3-3 night from long range with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) also had 14 points in the contest, with a block and a steal defensively, while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) had a career high 13 points coming off the bench with seven rebounds, shooting an efficient 6-9.
Endicott's Cora Nadeau had 19 points, shooting 7-12 from the floor, including four threes, with Libby Fleming pulling down nine rebounds. Sarah Dempsey added nine points in the matchup with Emma Shinney and Alyssa Garabedian each adding eight.
Roger Williams led 12-8 in offensive rebounds, holding a 39-34 edge overall. The Hawks held the edge in points off turnovers and second chance points.
Roger Williams opened up the game with
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) finishing a layup, before the Gulls followed up a layup of their own from Gabedian. Endicott took a 6-2 run, before Coppola knocked down a three to cut the lead back down to one. Galligan added a layup the ensuing possession for the Hawks, to cancel out the layup the previous Endicott possession by Taylor Bogdanski. Roger Williams took the lead with another three by Coppola, giving the Hawks a 12-10 lead.
The Hawks closed out the opening quarter, with Clark knocking down a jumper with 1:21 remaining, taking an 18-16 lead into the second quarter.
Cora Nadeau opened up the second frame for Endicott with a three-pointer to take the lead in the opening eight seconds of the quarter, before Galligan capped off a 7-2 run, as the Hawks retook a 25-22 lead. With the Hawks leading by four with 6:03 in the half, Endicott then responded with layups, back-to-back trips down the floor, leveling the game at 28-28. Roger Williams took lead 35-32 with 1:19 remaining, but Endicott was able to hit a buzzer beating layup to shrink the deficit to one heading into the half.
Coming out in the second half, Roger Williams led by 10, with 4:38 remaining with Coppola knocking down another three-pointer. A layup by Emma Shinney cut the Hawks' lead to eight, but
Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) drilled a three pointer. The Hawks went on to outscore the Gulls, 18-9, in the third quarter, taking a 53-43 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Endicott was able to shrink the lead down to as few as six, but Roger Williams held on downing the Gulls, 68-59.
Roger Williams (11-5, 7-1 CCC) will host Suffolk on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center before traveling to face Western New England on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 pm. The Hawks will then host Curry for Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1:00 pm.
