BRISTOL, R.I. – The Hawks of Roger Williams University battled by the Bison of Nichols College, 93-74, Tuesday evening in the Campus Recreation Center Gymnasium in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest.
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) tied a career-high 31 points with a 13-22 shooting performance from the floor, with nine rebounds, five assists, and a pair of blocks.
Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) scored in double figures on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting performance. With seven boards, five assists and a pair of blocks.
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) fell a rebound short of a double-double, scoring 10 points, with a pair of steals, and nine rebounds.
The Bison were led offensively by Abrianna Vazquez, who tallied 25 points with a pair of boards, and two steals. Summer Klein also added 21 points with six rebounds in the game, while Adriana Romano was responsible for 14 points, with five steals, and four rebounds.
Roger Williams led with 18 bench points to Nichols' six, while also holding a strong 66-34 edge in the paint. The Hawks also led by nine in second chance points, with both teams scoring 20 points off turnovers.
Galligan and Elie each scored a bucket for the Hawks to take an early lead. The Hawks led Nichols 15-8 with 3:24 remaining in the quarter, before Coppola had four opportunities from the line to expand the Roger Williams lead to 10.
Roger Williams led by 11 at the end of the first quarter, but Nichols was able to cut into the deficit in the second. After Roger Williams expanded the lead to as many as 18, the Bison went on a run, cutting the Roger Williams advantage down to nine at the half.
In the third frame, Nichols was able to take the lead, after Vazquez drilled a three pointer. With both teams knotted up in the final 30 seconds after the Bison's Leandra Ortiz, finished a layup in the paint, the Hawks then saw a jumper by Galligan and a buzzer beating three by
Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) go through the net to take a five point lead, they would not relinquish.
The Hawks outscored the Bison 27-13 in the final frame as they held on for the win.
Roger Williams (7-4, 4-0 CCC) will be in action on Thursday, Jan. 4 at Wentworth with tip off scheduled for 5:00 pm. The Hawks will then host Gordon on Saturday, Jan. 6 to round out the week.
