BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon, beating Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Curry, 77-55, in the Campus Rec Center.
Roger Williams had excellent shooting in the game, going 29-51 (56.8%) on field goal attempts. On the defensive end the Hawks also excelled, holding Curry to shoot 17-56 (30.3%) from the field. Roger Williams outrebounded the Colonels 44-24, including nine offensive rebounds for each team.
Roger Williams was led by sophomore guard
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.)
, who had a game-high 18 points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks. Freshman forward
Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) was also a big contributor to the Hawks' win, finishing with 15 points.
Elizabeth Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) had 11 points and
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) put up 10 points to help guide the Hawks to their double-digit win.
The Hawks wasted no time getting to the basket to start the game. Roger Williams started the game on a 10-1 run, with Coppola responsible for six of those points. Both teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, and the Hawks finished the first quarter with an 18-8 lead.
The second quarter was when Roger Williams was able to pull away from the Colonels. The Hawks once again started the quarter hot, going on a 16-2 run. Curry was able to answer with their own 6-1 run, but the Hawks put up six straight points in the final minute. Going into halftime, the Hawks held a commanding 41-15 lead.
Coming out of the half, Roger Williams continued their dominance on the offensive end. The Hawks extended their lead to as much as 34 points halfway through the third, with Qualey scoring for nine points in the quarter. However, Curry scored 10 unanswered points to end the quarter, making the score 60-38 going into the final quarter. Roger Williams' defense stayed strong, stopping the Colonels comeback attempt. The teams traded baskets for most of the fourth quarter, and the Hawks were able to secure their twelfth win of the season.
Roger Williams (12-7, 8-3 CCC) will travel to face the University of Hartford on Wednesday, Jan. 31 with tip set for 5:30 pm. The Hawks will then be on the road Saturday, Feb. 3 at Gordon before hosting Endicott on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
