BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team defeated Conference of New England (CNE) foe Suffolk on Tuesday evening at the Paolino Recreation Center.
The Hawks hit .302 on the match, with a total of 62 kills in the match to Suffolk's .171 and 59 kills. The Hawks also commited 11 errors and the Rams had 28 total errors in the match. Suffolk had 11 service aces to the Hawks 7, while Roger Williams also recorded 11 blocks to the Rams two.
Roger Williams was led by
Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) and
Taylor Joyner (Ashburn, Va.) who had 15 and 13 kills respectively.
Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) also had 12 kills with four blocks registering 14.5 points in the match.
Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) had 41 assists with two service aces and 10 digs for a double-double.
Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) also posted a double-double with 11 assists and 11 digs.
Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 22 digs in the match, with
Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.) and
Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) each recording 14 digs.
McKenna Keowen had 21 kills in the match, while also recording 24 digs in the match. Jasmine James and Chloe Clement had 11 and 10 kills respectively. Jayla Martinez had 22 assists, while Aislinn Lanigan had 17 assists. Morgan Kelsey had 21 digs in the match.
In the opening set, the Hawks led 24-21, but Suffolk scored four straight points to take a 25-24 lead. The Hawks leveled the score, trading points until the match was 29-29. Suffolk finished the set with a pair of kills by Sami Shore and Keowen, taking the opening set, 31-29.
With Suffolk leading 6-2, the Hawks rattled off nine straight points, taking an 11-6 lead. The Hawks led 20-14 later in the set before the Rams scored five of the next six points to close the gap within four, but the Hawks would hold onto a four-point lead to close the set.
With the match tied, 1-1, Roger Williams led in the third 10-8, but Suffolk again had five-point run, taking a 13-10 lead. The Rams continued to expand their lead with another run later in the set to clinch the set.
The Hawks opened up the fourth set with a 13-6 advantage, but Suffolk again used a run of their own, leveling the score. After Suffolk took a 20-19 lead off a kill by Keowen, The Hawks rattled off six straight points to end the set and force a fifth.
The Hawks were able to clinch the match in the fifth set, holding an 8-6 lead, the Hawks earned six out of the next seven points to take a 14-7 lead. Suffolk added two more points before the final serve of the match flew through the back of the endline, in favor of the Hawks.
Roger Williams (9-8, 2-1 CNE) the Hawks will return to action with a neutral site matchup against Wheaton on Saturday, Oct. 5 before they play the hosts Babson in Staake Gymnasium. The Hawks will then travel to face Wentworth on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 pm in a CNE match.
