Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Defeat Wheaton, Fall to Host Babson in Tri-Match

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team split in their tri-match Saturday afternoon at Babson, defeating Wheaton 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-22) before falling to the host Beavers, 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-13) in Staake Gymnasium.
 
In match one against the Lyons, Celina Henn led the Lyons with 11 kills, while the Hawks had a balanced attack with Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) leading the squad with eight, while Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) and Claire Davis (Trumbull, Conn.) had seven and six respectively. Kaydence Fish (Bedford, N.H.) and Davis each had four blocks on the match, with Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) leading in assists with 26 and digs with Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.), each had 12 in the match.
 
The opening set, took off after the Hawks went on and eight point run, while leading 12-10, taking a 10 point lead. The Hawks would maintain that lead eventually taking the first 25-14. In the second, Roger Williams again led by two, scoring seven of the next eight points taking an eight point lead. Wheaton climbed within four, but a kill by Picchietti and an attack error by the Lyons sealed the 2-0 match lead for the Hawks.
 
In the final set, the Lyons held a 8-6 advantage, before Roger Williams came back, scoring three straight to take the lead. Wheaton retook the lead, 12-11 and traded points back and forth with the Hawks, but  Roger Williams scored a pair of points when the game was tied 18-18, and never relinquished their advantage.
 
Against Babson, Picchietti had 14 kills, followed by Taylor Joyner (Ashburn, Va.) who tallied seven in the match. Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.) had the lone ace for Roger Williiams while Davis had a pair of blocks. Mattiucci had 25 assists, with Hernandez tallying 16 digs.
 
Roger Williams led in the opening set, 9-6, but four straight points from the Beavers, took the lead 10-6. With the Hawks trailing by one, 15-14, the Beavers scored 10 out of the final 12 points to end the opening set. The Hawks led by two with a 17-15 advantage in the second set, but again Babson rallied to score four straight points, retaking the lead in the set. The Hawks scored three straight points while trailing 24-21, leveling the score, but a kill by Hailey Fouche and an attack error led to a Babson set victory.
 
In the final set, Babson jumped out to an 18-11 advantage, before the Hawks struck twice to pull within five, but Babson again used a large run to secure the win.
 
Roger Williams (10-9, 2-1 CNE) will face Wentworth on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 pm in the Nelson Rec Center. The Hawks will then host Norwich on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1:00 pm before hosting Gordon on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 12:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center for another CNE match.
