Women's Volleyball: Roger Williams Prevails in CNE Battle of the Hawks

BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University defeated the University of Hartford in straight sets, 26-24, 25-19, 25-20, in a Commonwealth New England (CNE) women's volleyball match on Saturday at the Paolino Recreation Center.

Roger Williams (13-10, 4-2 CNE) earned its fourth conference victory behind a balanced offensive attack, with Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) leading Roger Williams with a match-high 13 kills. Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) contributed seven kills, while Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) added six kills and a team-high four blocks. Setter Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) paced the offense with 25 assists, while also chipping in three aces and two blocks.

Hartford (8-10, 3-3 CNE) was led by Tiffany Mendez, who recorded six kills, while Juliana Robinshaw and Jordan Murphy each added five kills. Murphy also led all players with 15 digs. Hartford struggled offensively, hitting just .018 as a team, with Roger Williams holding a 34-23 advantage in kills.

Roger Williams' defense was anchored by Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.), who collected 15 digs, while Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.) and Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) each added 10. The Hawks also held a 61-45 edge in digs and outpaced Hartford in service aces, 7-4.

In the opening set, Roger Williams overcame a late Hartford rally to secure a 26-24 win, with Picchietti delivering key kills. Roger Williams built on their momentum in the second set, winning 25-19, and closed out the match in the third with a 25-20 victory, hitting .243 in the final frame.

Roger Williams will be on the road to take on Rhode Island College on Wednesday, Oct. 30.  The Hawks will then travel to Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 2 as they begin their final three regular season CNE matchups.
