MEDFORD, MASS. – The Roger Williams women's basketball team defeated Tufts for their first win against the Jumbos in program history. The win gives the Hawks their second win in a row, moving them to 2-2.
The Hawks stifling defense proved to be the difference maker in this one, holding the Jumbos to just 54 points. In the first quarter, Roger Williams held the opponent to just six points, while scoring 12 of their own. Tufts bounced back in the second quarter, closing the half on a massive 17-0 run, giving them a 26-22 lead.
The Hawks and Jumbos played each other even in the third quarter, with the Jumbos heading into the fourth with a 43-39 lead. Roger Williams defense rose to the occasion once again, holding Tufts to just 11 points in the quarter allowing them to secure the 57-54 win. The Hawks defense forced the opponent into 28% shooting from the field, and 15% from three on 34 attempts for the game
Sophia Coppola (Madison Conn.) led the way in the scoring department, with a game-high 18 points. She finished 5-5 from the free throw, with clutch makes down the stretch to finish out the game for the Hawks.
Chloe Richardson (Nowell, Mass.) and E. Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) chipped in 11 and 10 respectively. Tufts failed to have anyone score double figures in the matchup, with Sarah Crossett and Monet Witherspoon netting a team high nine points each.
Roger Williams (2-2) will travel back home where they will take on Umass Dartmouth in their final non-conference matchup before beginning Conference of New England action after Thanksgiving break. The matchup will take place on Tuesday, November 23. They will then take on Wentworth for their first CNE matchup on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
