BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams women's basketball team fell to Montclair State University (MSU) 72-57 in their season opener.
The Hawks opened their season with a loss on Saturday afternoon, falling to Montclair State in non-conference action. The Hawks played MSU even in the first half, as the team's headed to half knotted at 33, before eventually being outscored by 15 in the second half.
The difference in the matchup was the turnover margin, as the Hawks turned it over 28 times to MSU's 12. MSU scored 29 points of their 72 points off of Hawks turnovers, compared to Roger William's 11 points off of turnovers. Montclair State also outscored the Hawks 42 to 22 inside the paint.
Individually, senior E. Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) and sophomore
Chloe Richardson (Norwall, Mass.) led the way in the scoring department, totaling 11 points each. Sophomore Lily Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) and junior
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) added seven and six respectively. Coppola and sophomore forward
Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) led the Hawks on the glass, grabbing seven rebounds each. Coppola also chipped in four blocks for the Hawks. On the other side of the ball, Olivia Vero paced Montclair State, totaling 23 points and 14 rebounds. Daja Wentz and Alyssa Craigwell added 13 and 12 points respectively. Sophia Beneventine chipped in seven assists for the Red Hawks.
The Hawks will fall to 0-1 to begin their season, with their next matchup coming next Friday, Nov. 15 at Babson College.
