BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger William's women's basketball team defeated Wentworth 73-39 in their first matchup of Conference of New England play.
The Hawks dominated the matchup from start to finish, jumping out to a 16-0 lead to begin the evening. They closed out the first period with a 20-4 lead. In the second period, Roger Williams outscored Wentworth by two, giving them a 33-15 lead at halftime. The third quarter was more of the same as the Hawks put up 25 points, expanding their lead to 28 heading into the fourth. They would go on to defeat the Leopards 73-39, giving them their first win in conference play.
In the matchup Wentworth turned the ball over 28 times to Roger Williams 12. The Hawks also outrebounded the Leopards 42-38. From the field, Roger Williams shot 11% better than the opponent, shooting 42% to the Leopards 32%.
It was a team effort from the Hawks, as they had 12 member's score. They were led by
Abrielle Racine's (Mooers Forks, N.Y.) 16 points on 7-13 shooting from the field.
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) added 13 of her own, tying a team high in rebounds with six.
Cara Murphy (Springfield, Mass.) and Cloe Richardson (Nowell, Mass.) grabbed six each as well. Murphy chipped in a game-high three steals. E. Dufrane (Falls Church, Va.) paced the Hawks in the assist department with six of the team's 18.
The win puts the Hawks at 3-3 on the season, and 1-0 in CNE action. They will travel to Nichols College on Saturday, Dec. 7 to take on the Bison in their next CNE matchup. Following Nichols, they will head into winter break with a matchup against Curry at home on Dec. 10.
