NORTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team opened the regular season on Wednesday evening at Wheaton, downing the Lyons, 18-3, in non-conference action.
The Hawks went 15-20 on clears, with 27 shots in the game. The Hawks also saw 12 saves from
Zoey Cormican (Rochester, N.H.) in goal.
Offensively, three players had six points for Roger Williams as
Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) tallied six goals,
Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.) had three goals and three assists, and
Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals and four assists.
Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had a pair of goals and two assists, with
Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.) scoring three goals with an assist. Terino also had six draw controls in the game.
Creegan had a pair of caused turnovers and six ground balls to go with three draw controls, while Chapin also had three draws in the game with a caused turnover.
Avonlea Lebeau had a pair of goals for Wheaton, with Lara Finnie scoring the third for the Lyons. Riley Kilbourn and Sophie Gromala each had an assist in the game.
The Hawks struck early, with Creegan potting a shot into the cage with 2:05 elapsed in the contest. Terino followed shortly after with her first goal of the season 1:40 leater to give Roger Williams a 2-0 lead. With the extra player advantage, Finnie struck for Wheaton cutting the Roger Williams lead in half, but Creegan's second goal rattled off a run of 10 straight goals, lasting until the 8:05 mark of the third period, when Lebeau scored a goal for Wheaton.
The Hawks again scored a string of six-straight goals before Lebeau scored a player down for the final goal of the game.
"We are excited to open the year 1-0," spoke Head Coach
Amanda Magee. "We played well int eh offensive end and saw a strong showing defensively and in cage. We look forward to getting back out against Springfield on Saturday."
Roger Williams (1-0, 0-0 CCC) will play at Springfield on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 12:00 pm. The Hawks will then travel to Amherst on Wednesday, Mar. 6 at 6:00 pm before taking on MIT Saturday, Mar. 9 at 1:00 pm, for their fourth of six road contests to start the season.
