Women's Lacrosse: Hawks Suffer First Loss of the Season at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team lost 10-6 against Springfield College on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

The Hawks' offense was led by Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.), who tallied two goals and one assist for a team-high three points. Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Ella Waryas (Foxborough, Mass.) also contributed to the Hawks' effort, with a goal and assist from each of them. Zoey Cormican (Rochester, N.H.) had 14 saves in goal.

Springfield took 30 shots in the game, while Roger Williams took only 16. The Hawks went 16-22 on clears.

The game got off to a quick start, with Springfield's Samantha Andersen scoring just 39 seconds into the contest. Roger Williams was quick to answer, as Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored 50 seconds later with an assist from Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.). Springfield took the lead back with 7:56 left in the first period, opening up a 3-1 lead on the Hawks. Roger Williams was able to strike back in the later end of the first period, outscoring the Pride 3-1. By the end of the first, the score was tied, 4-4..

Roger Williams opened the scoring four minutes into the second period with a goal by Waryas. Cutting through the defense, she found an opening in front of the net, where she delivered the ball past Springfield's goalie and into the back on the net. This was the Hawks' only goal of the period, as Springfield answered with two goals in the final part of the period. The Hawks faced a 6-5 deficit going into halftime.

The third period was a defensive battle for both teams. Roger Williams was the first to score a goal, coming with 4:22 left in the period. Springfield answered with just five seconds left in the period to give the Pride the lead heading into the final period, 7-6.

Springfield continued their momentum into the fourth period, and the Hawks were unable to score in the fourth. Springfield increased their lead with two goals in the first half of the period. They also added a final goal with just nine seconds left in the game to extended their lead to four.

Roger Williams (1-1, 0-0 CCC) will travel to face Amherst on Wednesday, Mar. 6 at 6:00 pm on Gooding Field.  The Hawks will then play their fourth of six straight road contests to start the season on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 1:00 pm at MIT.
