ORLANDO, Fla. – The Roger Williams University men's tennis team opened up their Spring Break trip to Florida with a victory over St. Norbert, 8-1, at the USTA National Campus on Sunday afternoon.
This is the first ever meeting between the two programs, with the Hawks taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
In doubles play,
Johnny Baldyga (Simsbury, Conn.) and
Cooper Brown (Plano, Texas) opened up with an 8-1 victory at the No. 3 doubles sport. The Hawks then earned their second point of the match, with an 8-4 win by
Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) and
Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) in No. 1 doubles. Roger Williams was able to complete the doubles sweep, with a No. 2 doubles victory by
Camden Poitras and
Konnor Collins (Broken Arrow, Okla.), 8-5.
Holding a 3-0 lead, the Hawks picked up a point at No. 3 singles, with Poitras earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory in his match. Roger Williams then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory by Carroll at No. 1 singles.
The Hawks earned another win at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1, with Hurlbut taking a victory before Baldyga earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. Collins picked up the final point for Roger Williams with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. St. Norbert then closed out the match, picking up their lone point with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 win by David Vandenberg at No. 6 singles against Brown.
Roger Williams (3-2, 0-0 CCC) will continue their Spring Break trip on Monday at 12:00 pm at the USTA National Campus against Edgewood.
