ORLANDO, Fla. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team fell to Edgewood in a tight matchup on Monday afternoon, 5-4, at the USTA National Campus.
In doubles play, Edgewood earned an 8-1 victory in No. 3 doubles play with an 8-1 victory, before picking up their second point of the match at No. 1 doubles, when Cecile Fuchs and Evelyn Taylor edged out
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and
Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles. The Hawks responded however closing out the doubles portion with an 8-7 win at No. 2 doubles by
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and
Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.).
Trailing 2-1 at the start of singles action, the Hawks were the first team to strike earning a win at No. 5 singles when
Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory, leveling the match, ahead of a win by Mancini had a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot, for the Hawks to take a 3-2 lead.
Ellie Murphy posted a 6-4, 6-1 win in No. 4 doubles leveling the score for Edgewood. Cahoon then picked up a win for the Hawks at No. 2 singles, retaking the lead for the Hawks, with a 7-5, 6-3 win.
Edgewood would bounce back with a three set victory in No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 by Fuchs leveling the match, ahead of Taylor who closed the contest with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.
Roger Williams (12-5, 4-2 CCC) will return to competition on Tuesday, Mar. 12 against Western Connecticut State.
