SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team fell to Union on Monday in non-conference action at Frank Bailey Field.
The Hawks were led offensively by
Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) who registered a pair of goals and five assists for seven points, with
Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) chipping in three points with two goals and an assist.
Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) had six draw controls, with a ground ball and a caused turnover in the contest, while
Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) and Chapin both added five draw controls, with Creegan forcing five turnovers with six assists.
The Hawks were out shot 38-23 in the contest, while
Zoey Cormican (Rochester, N.H.) and
Caroline Roach (Acton, Mass.) combined for a total of 13 saves in cage.
Union opened the matchup with a pair of goals, before
Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) potted one off an assist from
Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.) to cut the deficit in half. The Hawks and Dutchwomen traded goals before Union began to put stretches of goals together. With 12:39 remaining in the first half, Katie Julien put in a shot, leading to a stretch of three straight goals. Chapin added one for the Hawks, but the Dutchwomen again went on a three goal stretch to take a 9-3 lead.
Ella Waryas (Foxborough, Mass.) added a goal in the second quarter, but Union struck again with 10 seconds remaining to take a 10-4 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime the Hawks gave up four straight goals before Creegan scored a goal with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, to cut the Dutchwomen's lead down to nine. The Hawks then outscored Union, 5-2, in the fourth quarter but were unable to overcome the deficit.
Roger Williams (1-4, 0-0 CCC) will travel to face Colby on Sunday, Mar. 17 at 1:00 pm at Bill Alfond Field. The Hawks will then host Bowdoin in their Bayside Field opener on Wednesday, Mar. 20 at 4:00 pm.
