AMHERST, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team fell to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Amherst on Wednesday, at Pratt Field, 20-11, in the first ever meeting of the two non-conference opponents.
Amherst led in shots 38-23 with the Hawks'
Zoey Cormican (Rochester, N.H.) and
Caroline Roach (Acton, Mass.) each saving five shots for a combined 10 saves in the contest. Amherst only faced five shots on goal with Jessye Salmon and Caroline Stole splitting time in cage.
Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) had a game-high seven points in the contest with four goals and three assists, placing five shots on target.
Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) had two goals and five draw controls in the game, while
Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.) had a pair of points with two assists on the game.
Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) also had a goal in the contest

Mia Raven and Kate Becker led the way for the Mammoths with five points a piece while Clara Sosa had four goals in the game. Sofia Guttman added three points, with Bridget Darcy, Mary Gum, and Rachel Rogers adding two points each.
Amherst struck first with Sosa scoring, 1:19 into the contest, but Roger Williams responded with a goal just under two minutes later by Kelley to level the contest at 1-1. Rogers and Sosa then scored the next three to put the Mammoths up by three with 2:50 remaining in the first quarter, but
Ella Waryas (Foxborough, Mass.) and
Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) each potted a goal into the cage to cut the Amherst lead down to one with 48 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Amherst's Bridget Finley scored with 12 seconds remaining in the opening frame to take a 5-3 lead into the second quarter.
The Mammoths would continue to expand their lead scoring the opening two goals of the second frame, before Kelley was on the receiving end of a pass from Pantano, that Kelley then put into the cage cutting the lead down, 7-4. Amherst scored three straight goals to take a 10-4 lead, before Kelley scored her third goal of the contes, before another four goals were scored to take a 14-5 lead. Creegan added a goal with 45 seconds remaining in the opening half, closing with the Hawks trailing 14-6.
Roger Williams scored the opening goal but the Mammoths responded with three straight to take a 17-7 lead. With 7:32 remaining in the third quarter. The Hawks would score two out of the next three before the Mammoths scored a pair of goals in the fourth, before the Hawks closed out the game with two goals in the final minutes of the contest.
Roger Williams (1-2, 0-0 CCC) will face off against MIT on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 1:00 pm at
Jack Barry Field. The Hawks will then open Spring Break at Union on Monday, Mar. 11 at 5:00 pm before rounding out the week at Sunday, Mar. 17 at 1:00 pm.
