Women’s Lacrosse: Hawks Fall to Bowdoin in Final Seconds of Home Opener

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team fell to Bowdoin, 15-14, in the final seconds of regulation on Wednesday in the Hawks' home opener on Bayside Field.

Roger Williams was out shot, 37-25, with the Polar Bears put 26 attempts on cage to the Hawks' 20. Both teams were perfect on clear attempts, while Bowdoin edged out the ground ball battle, 25-24. The Hawks also trailed by one in draw controls 16-15.

Annie Moore led the way for the Polar Bears offense, registering four points with three goals and an assist, while Emelia Krakora and Lauren Burke had three points with five goals between them, with Burke adding an assist. Krakora had five draw controls Auggie Burke causing three turnovers in the game.

Mia Pantano (Cohasset, Mass.) had four points alongside Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) both with three goals and an assist. Emma Terino (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) also had four points with Terino scoring a goal and three assists, while Kelley had a pair of goals and two assists. Creegan had 10 draw controls setting a career high. Creegan, Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), and Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.) had two caused turnovers each.

The Hawks struck first with a goal 3:05 into the contest when Terino found Pantano to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. Caroline Higgins and Krakora then scored goals 13 seconds apart, taking a 2-1 lead. Terino then potted one with six seconds remaining to head into the second quarter knotted up, 2-2.

With Anna Kelly and Ella Waryas (Foxborough, Mass.) scoring a goal for each side, leveling the matchup at thr3-3, Krakora added another goal with 7:01 remaining to take a 4-3 lead, but Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Waryas scored two straight, giving the Hawks a 5-4 lead. Bowdoin then scored three goals to close out the half over the final 3:02, taking a 7-5 lead into the half.

Coming out of the half, Bowdoin struck again, expanding their lead to three, before the Hawks stormed back scoring three goals in less than a minute, leveling the matchup at 8-8. Bowdoin responded with another four-goal run to take a 12-8 lead, before Pantano and Chapin ended the third quarter and started the fourth quarter with goals, cutting the deficit back down to two.

Bowdoin scored a goal to go up by three, before Roger Williams saw goals by Creegan and Pantano cut the lead back down to one. Bowdoin then struck again with Lauren Burke scoring on a player up opportunity, before Chapin answered with a player advantage goal for the Hawks. Kelley leveled the score at 14, before Krakora closed out the contest with 15 seconds remaining to score.

Roger Williams (1-6, 0-0 CCC) will begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Wednesday, Mar. 27 at 4:00 pm against Curry on Bayside Field. The Hawks will then travel to Blue Bolt Field for a matchup against the University of New England on Saturday, Mar. 30.
