BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team eased their way to victory in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener on Wednesday against Curry, 24-6, on Bayside Field.
The Hawks, playing in their second regular season home contest of the season, were led by
Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) who posted eight points with three goals and five assists.
Karli Chapin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) also had three goals with a pair of assists, with four draw controls and three ground balls.
Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) had four points with hat trick and assist. The Hawks had 15 separate goal scorers.
The Hawks out shot Curry, 44-15, with the Hawks going 9-for-9 on clear attempts. The Hawks also held a 25-7 edge in draw controls.
The Hawks opened scoring early, with the Hawks top three goal scorers each striking in the opening minute.
Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) then scored her first of two goals 1:31 into the match, before Shamberger struck for a second time to put the Hawks up 5-0.
Curry struck with 12:26 remaining in the opening quarter, but the Hawks rattled off another five straight to take a 10-1 lead just over 10 minutes into the contest. Both teams traded a goal to end the first, with Roger Williams leading 11-2 heading into the second.
In the second the Hawks outscored the Colonels 6-1 taking a 17-3 lead into the break. The third quarter saw,
Jaymie Arena (Hopkinton, Mass.),
Ella Waryas (Foxborough, Mass.), and
Meghan Holmes (Pembroke, Mass.) strike for the Hawks while conceding two goals to Curry. Roger Williams scored four times in the fourth with
Allegra Kotowitz (West Hartford, Conn.),
Mikayla Fey (Bethlehem, Pa.),
Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.), and
Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.) each scoring goals before Curry closed out the scoring in the final five seconds.
Roger Williams (2-6, 1-0 CCC) will travel to Biddeford, Maine on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 4:00 pm before hosting Wentworth on Tuesday, Apr. 2.
