SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Roger Williams University defeated Springfield College on Wednesday in a non-conference collegiate tennis match, 5-4.
In doubles play, Springfield College picked up the first win of the showdown in the No. 3 doubles pairing with Ethan Gomulka and Phakin Thongbooncharoen downing
Cooper Brown (Plano, Texas) and
Steven Mathew (Bayport, N.Y.), 8-2. Springfield College acquired another point in No. 1 doubles with Marc Villanueva and Tatsuya Kimoto subduing
Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) and
Johnny Baldyga (Simsbury, Conn.), 8-1. The No. 2 doubles match was then won by the Hawks'
Camden Poitras and
Konnor Collins (Broken Arrow, Okla.), 8-6.
Heading into singles play the Hawks were down 2-1. In the No. 3 singles match Poitras overcame Tatsuya, 6-1, 7-5. The Hawks' Carroll then gave in to Kimoto in the No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Springfield College then gained another point when Gomulka prevailed over Brown in the No. 5 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Collins also won his match for the Hawks, downing Tim Norin in the No. 4 singles game, 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 6 singles,
Matt Glassman (West Hartford, Conn.) faced off against Springfield's Zach Taub and won the game, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4. The Hawks then earned another point to level the match.
Going into the last match of the day, the score was tied 4-4 before Baldyga picked up a win in the No. 2 singles spot, defeating Villanueva, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 and bringing the final score to 5-4 to the Hawks.
Roger Williams (6-3, 0-0 CCC) will play Bridgewater State at home on Mar. 27 at 4:00 pm before traveling to Beverly, Mass for their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match against Endicott on Friday, Mar. 29.
